What is sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is the treatment of choice for the elimination of certain types of leg veins (varcisose veins, spider veins). It is an outpatient procedure that involves the injection of a sclerosant directly into the vein by a fine needle. Sclerosants work by irritating the blood vessel wall, causing the blood within it to clot or the wall lining to collapse and form a scar. Blood is then redirected to healthier blood vessels and the clot or scar formed through sclerotherapy fades in time.

Your dermatologist will first assess if you are a good candidate for sclerotherapy upon your initial consultation. Auxiliary examinations may be requested to further evaluate the anatomy of your leg veins and assess your general medical condition. It is important to know that it may take several sessions to eliminate all the blood vessels and that this procedure will not prevent the development of new spider veins and varicosities. It is also quite common to feel some tenderness and develop some pigmentation over the area although these are not permanent.
